Correspondence with Watercolor

Watercolors are the essence of correspondence because of their transparency and the range in dry and wet.

My favorites are the Primatek Colors from Daniel Smith. They are mineral-based and pigment-rich. https://danielsmith.com/product/daniel-smith-primatek-watercolors/

I store information about them in a sketchbook. I enter them with heavy and light pigment. Water is an ongoing source of correspondence with watercolor: high pigment and low pigment mixes.

When I start a painting that will be a long commitment, I select colors and set up a correspondence chart to help me see how the colors work together. This system allows me to see every corresponding combination of colors 1:1 at high, medium, and low pigment density.

As the painting develops, I use this chart to build layers of color. I use very small brushes. This painting was commissioned during COVID-19.
